Treviso is only a twenty minute train journey from Venice so it's understandable why it is often overlooked as a place to visit in favour of its much larger and postcard-worthy neighbour. It is the perfect example of one of those places that you really like but are unable to put your finger on why. Our two nights in Treviso have definitely be some of the best that we've had on this trip.
Maybe it was the small, winding canals that were flanked by stylish cafes, filled with equally stylish local Italians. Or the University right in the centre of town that made it buzz both day and night. Or the beautiful room that we had in a very old and large Italian home. Or maybe it was simply that it is the home of Tiramisu and any city that has a claim to something as wonderful as that must constantly strive to keep up with the high expectations set by their ancestors.
Hearing about us drinking coffee and eating dinners doesn’t make great reading so this will be a short blog but I do have a couple of recommendations if you do ever go:
Get the fried cheese and meat bread (Mozzarella in Carrozza) from Osteria Dalla Gigia. A small bar and cafe where the walls are covered in old mobile phones so you get to indulge in delicious food while still feeling as though you are having a history lesson.
For gelato, you can't go past Dassie. It's delicious and has large portion sizes which are obviously the two most important criteria when assessing gelato quality. Messina is going to have a lot to live up to when we get back to Sydney!
Go for a jog around the city walls because if you don’t, you can’t justify the fried cheese and meat bread and gelato which you will obviously repeat the next day.
We did tear ourselves away from Treviso for a couple of hours to visit Venice. We had a nice afternoon walking around all the waterways and taking a ferry up the Grand Canal but we were both keen to get back to Treviso for the evening where we indulged in a Bento Box from one of the many Japanese restaurants in town. I’ve always questioned people who have Indian food when they are holidaying in France or Chinese food when they are in holidaying in Croatia but we couldn’t bear another pasta dish and some fresh sushi and sashimi was just what we fancied.
Amazingly, our next stop won't be in Italy as we head to Lake Bled in Slovenia. But we will be back!
